THE PERFECT PLACE TO GROW WINE
The origins of Quinta S. João Batista are lost among stories of noble inheritances, donations to religious orders and other events. It was purchased in 1987 by Caves Dom Teodósio (company that was later integrated in the Group Enoport United Wines) and since then much has been being invested in the restructuring of the vineyards by replacing old vineyards of clones not quite interesting to the demands of the current market and of difficult adaptation to mechanization, by varietals with proven success in the region.
The century-old history of Quinta S. João Batista is well represented in this manor house of colonial style that also includes an architectural set with excellent cellars to age the wine and a traditional winemaking winery.
ONE PLACE, HECTARES OF POTENTIAL
It has a total area of around 115 hectares, of which 97 ha are planted with vineyards. Among the varietals planted the majority are for red wines (around 76 ha) and besides the Portuguese traditional varietals such as Castelão, Trincadeira Preta, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca (50%), there are also international varietals here planted such as Syrah, Alicante Bouschet and Cabernet Sauvignon (50%). The around 21 ha of white varietals planted in 1991 are the traditional of the Tejo region, such as Arinto (30%), Fernão Pires (35%) and Malvasia (20%) and also international grapes such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Quinta S. João Batista is located in the parish of Brogueira, municipality of Torres Novas, within the Tejo Wine Region.
PRODUCTION & WINEMAKING
An excellent micro climate (close to the Tagus River) and the quality of the soil contribute to the production of excellent wines produced with several varietals planted and certified for the production of wines with the denomination of Origin TEJO.
All the estate is equipped with the drop-by-drop irrigation system and the vineyards planted in trellises to allow a mechanized harvest.
From these vines come wines such as Quinta S. João Batista Touriga Nacional, a very limited production that ages for 12 months in new French oak barrels.
At Quinta S. João Batista there is one of the largest winemaking centres of the group with capacity for 1.500.000 kilos of grapes. It is also equipped with a traditional winery that combines knowledge and tradition with innovation, using new technologies such as temperature control in all fermentation vats and epoxy coating in the traditional concrete vats, besides a modern pneumatic press. It produces white and red wines, DOC and Regional Wines and it has an ageing room for quality wines that is one of the largest in the region.
ECOLOGY & SUSTAINABILITY
The vines planted in our Estates are growing in an integrated production system giving priority to ecological and certificated methods (soil conservation and biodiversity maintenance) that minimize the harmful side effects and the use of agro chemicals, in order to protect the environment and the human health.
Our wine estate Quinta São João Batista is in the vicinity of the Natural Reserve of Paul of Boquilobo. This estate is a sanctuary for the animals from this Reserve that choose it for protection and procreation.
It is possible in the Estate to observe all kinds of birds that come here on their migration routes, most notably the famous storks that, from October to May, make their nest here, lending a special beauty to the landscape. The Natural Reserve of Paul of Boquilobo was chosen by UNESCO as one of the three hundred reserves in the world, representing the main ecosystems of the Biosphere.
