THE PERFECT PLACE TO GROW WINE
Decided to pursue a quality policy in all its wines, Caves Velhas”(company that was later integrated in the group Enoport United Wines) took the decision to purchase Quinta do Boição in May 1983, which grapes were already sold to Caves Velhas by the owners at the time.
Quinta do Boição is located in Bucelas, next to the Boição stream and included in the famous Bucelas DOC Region, around 25 km away from Lisbon with good accessibility using the A8 and A9 motorways.
ONE PLACE, HECTARES OF POTENTIAL
This wine estate has a total area of 45 hectares of which 37 ha are planted with vineyards. Of these, around 14 ha are planted with red varietals, namely 4 ha of old vineyards (with an average of 50 years old) not planted in trellises and the remaining 10 ha planted with Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Syrah, Caladoc and Merlot. Grapes are handpicked and placed in boxes.
These vineyards give origin to wines such as Quinta do Boição Special Selection Old Vineyards made with grapes from vines with more than 50 years-old and aged for 12 months in new French oak barrels.
The remaining 23 ha are planted with white varietals, mainly Arinto, the prevailing varietal of the region that gives origin to the famous Caves Velhas Bucellas, true ex-libris of this region. The Estate has also a small area planted with the international grape Chardonnay. In the last years, many vineyards have been reconverted aiming at achieving a better quality of the raw material of the wines coming from this wine estate.
Soils are mainly of poor and hard limestone with a climate quite cold during the winter, but warm and dry in the summer and with some humidity during the night, thus creating a micro climate favourable to the perfect balance between sugars and acidity and conferring it some vivacity quite characteristic of the white wines of the Bucelas DOC region.
PRODUCTION & WINEMAKING
Quinta do Boição has a modern winemaking centre with capacity for 500.000 liters of wine. It is equipped with a stemmer, tube exchanger to cool the must, two modern pneumatic presses and all vats are in stainless steel with temperature control and equipped with casing for water circulation. The storage of the wine is done in stainless steel vats, but there is also an area for the ageing of high quality wines in oak barrels.
Here are produced the white wines DOC Bucelas and the reds Regional Lisboaa.

The vines planted in our Estates are growing in an integrated production system giving priority to ecological and certificated methods (soil conservation and biodiversity maintenance) that minimize the harmful side effects and the use of agro chemicals, in order to protect the environment and the human health.
